The victorian era proper lasted from 1837 to 1901, and fashions evolved notably during the period. Corsets were par for the course, and dramatic silhouettes were favored, emphasizing tiny waists and full hips. While wearing victorian costuming is certainly optional for this retreat, dressing up a bit is encouraged. I will be posting some links with examples. It is not necessary to break the bank and go all out, but if you look through your closet and think romantic, things you might like to wear out dancing, and clothes that are comfortable to move in, you will have your bases covered. Remember that February can be cold, but at least victorian style is very layered. I for one will be crafting a new petticoat and possibly some flirty bloomers for the occasion.
Though votes for women were not granted until 1920, Increasing independence for women certainly influenced fashions as the victorian age came toward a close. You can see the changing silhouettes from 1812-1912 in this illustration.
My cousin is an excellent historical clothier. She also does re-enactment and demonstrations. Her votes for women sashes have been a trend setter on etsy this election season. Some of her work can be seen here- https://www.facebook.com/thclothiers/?hc_location=ufi
